The Radstock Museum:
The award-winning Museum celebrating the History of Victorian Radstock, the Radstock Museum, officially known as ‘Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum’, is a captivating destination that delves into the rich industrial and social heritage of the North Somerset Coalfield. Located near here and very much worth a visit, set in the historic Victorian Market Hall in Radstock, Somerset, the museum offers an immersive experience into the lives of miners and their communities from the 19th century onwards. It houses exhibits, artefacts, showcases and models to demonstrate life in that period, and their permanent displays tell you of the life of a Somerset miner and his family and show how the communities of the coalfield were integrated.
Radstock Museum holds a unique archive of documents and images relating to the social and industrial heritage of the former Somerset Coalfield. While they cannot display all this material, it can be made available for research purposes.
The museum is open daily (closed on Mondays) from 14:00 to 17:00 except for Saturday, when it is open from 11:00 to 17:00 (closed on Mondays). Details can be found on their website:
The Radstock Market Hall:
Before housing the Radstock Museum, the building was used as the Radstock Market Hall. Constructed in 1897, it was a significant historical landmark in the Market Place of Radstock, Somerset. It is now a Grade II listed building. It is notable for its metal frame structure, corrugated asbestos roof, and distinctive architectural features such as a central four-way clock with an ornamental belfry.
