COAL MINING IN SOMERSET:
Coal mining in Somerset actually dates back to Roman times, with more extensive development in the 18th century after the steam engine allowed deeper mining. The last Somerset coal mines closed in 1973.
THE RADSTOCK DRAGONFLY (Boltonites Radstockensis)
In 1912, a fossilised dragonfly was found amongst the shale waste near this location at Tyning Colliery. Its wingspan was approximately 40cm, making it the largest insect fossil discovered in the British Isles. The actual fossil is currently housed at the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences in Cambridge. The Radstock Museum has a half-sized display model.
